darth vader lives in balloon formwe went to the glowdeo last night--that is the glow for the special shapes flying at balloon fiesta this year. and, this was the only balloon we were interested in seeing! (this is the website for the darth vader balloon.) that is, it was the only one we were interested in seeing until it caught on fire, right in front of us. not much burned--the propane burner was aimed at the back opening of the balloon and when they shot the flames up into the balloon to make it glow it singed, and burned, and completely scared the hell out of gus. i was actually taking a picture of it right when it was happening and missed the burn by mere inches:

(sorry about the spots--my flash pictures are crap) you can see the hole and the scorch marks in this oneit would have been far less scary for him if a hysterical woman right next to us wouldn't have been shouting "FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!!!" in an extremely crowded area. no one panicked, thankfully, and they got the singeing/burning under control. and as rich wisely pointed out to gus, "vader burns in star wars, so this is totally appropriate." indeed. anyway, after that gus decided that hanging around the darth vader balloon was just a totally rotten idea so we walked around and he found a new favorite--one shaped like the space shuttle:
it is a cool balloon, albeit rather phallic, and gus enjoyed it.three more days, then the balloons are gone for another year. if you've never been to balloon fiesta, please come and visit us for it sometime!
